Mrs. Rosemary Adkins Scholarship

Established: 2020

Donor: CAPT James N. Adkins, Jr., USN (Ret.)

This scholarship was established by CAPT James N. Adkins, Jr., USN (Ret.) in honor of his late wife, Rosemary. Rosemary Adkins was a devoted Navy wife who tackled the many challenges of being a Navy wife. She managed the complexities of multiple cross-country and cross-ocean moves, helped her children navigate new schools, served as sole parent when Jim was at sea for months at a time, and supported other Navy wives through her participation in wives’ clubs and informal networks. This scholarship continues her legacy of supporting Navy families.

This scholarship was established as part of the Submarine Centennial celebration, through contributions from the Pearl Harbor Submarine Officers’ Spouses’ Charitable Association (SOSCA).

LCDR Robert D. “Ben” Benites Scholarship

This scholarship was established by the estate of Joe Henry Senft, a member of U.S. SUBVETS WW II to recognize the contributions of the late LCDR Robert D. “Ben” Benites, USN (Ret.), who served as the U.S. SUBVETS WW II Scholarship Director for over 20 years.

RADM Arlington F. Campbell Scholarship

Donor: Dolphin Scholarship Foundation and Mrs. Bonnie Campbell-Kuhn

This scholarship was initially established by Dolphin Scholarship Foundation’s Board of Directors in memory of RADM Arlington F. Campbell, USN (Ret.) for the many years he served on the Board. It was later fully endowed by his widow, Mrs. Bonnie Campbell-Kuhn, in 2010.

Mrs. Katy Chiles Scholarship

Donor: Dolphin Scholarship Foundation

This scholarship was established to recognize the generous support given to the Dolphin Scholarship Foundation by Mrs. Katy Chiles. Katy graduated from Hood College majoring in Biology and married Hank Chiles, an Ensign in the navy in 1961. She was involved in numorous volunteer organizations such as Ship Family Coordinator, American Red Cross, and Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society as a social worker. She ran her own pottery business, was Chairman of Volunteers for the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society in Washington and Italy. Katy volunteered at the Henry Doorly Zoo, Joslyn Art Museum, Wives Club, Food Pantry and National Military Family Association. She served Dolphin Scholarship Foundation as Director and President.

RADM Jack Darby Scholarship

Donor: Pearl Harbor Submarine Officers’ Spouses Charitable Association

This scholarship was established by the Submarine Officers’ Spouses’ Charitable Association (SOSCA) of Pearl Harbor. At the time of his death in 1987, Rear Admiral Darby was Commander Submarine Force, Pacific Fleet.

This scholarship was established to recognize the generous support given to Dolphin Scholarship Foundation by the Carl Del Signore Foundation. Mr. Del Signore served in the Submarine Force during World War II, and had a special fondness for members of the Submarine Force.

Mrs. Cindy Giambastiani Scholarship

Established: 2018

This scholarship was established to recognize the generous support given to the Dolphin Scholarship Foundation by Mrs. Cindy Giambastiani. Cindy graduated from Cornell University with a bachelor’s degree in nutrition. As a Navy family, the Giambastianis have been stationed at various submarine and naval bases along the East and West coast, as well as Hawaii. For over 31 years, Cindy has been serving in support groups and organizations in the local military communities. Some of her achievements include serving for two years as chairman of the Spouses Program for newly selected Navy flag officers, and as president of the Dolphin Scholarship Foundation.

VADM & Mrs. Elton Grenfell, USN (Ret.) Scholarship

This scholarship was established as a memorial to Vice Admiral Elton (Joe) Grenfell and in 1996, the DSF Board of Directors voted to honor his widow, Mrs. Martha Grenfell, by including her name in the scholarship title. Mrs. Grenfell founded Dolphin Scholarship Foundation in 1960. Mrs. Grenfell continued to be an active member of the DSF Distinguished Advisory Board until her death in July 2008. 

Mrs. Kathy Grossenbacher Scholarship

This scholarship was established to recognize the generous support given to the Dolphin Scholarship Foundation by Mrs. Kathy Grossenbacher. Kathy was born at Naval Station Guantanamo in 1947 and was the daughter of a Navy pilot. She was also the wife of a Navy submarine officer and mentored and supported innumerable submarine spouses and families over the years. She served as President of the Dolphin Scholarship Foundation from 2000 to 2003 when her husband was commander, Submarine Force Atlantic. Kathy was proud of her accomplishments that took place during her tenure with DSF, and some of the initiatives she helped spearhead set it on a course that continues to this day.

This endowed scholarship was established in honor of Mrs. Myra (Mickey) Kauderer, affectionately known as Mrs. Sublant. She is also a former Dolphin Scholarship President from 1983-1986.

Lisle & Emily Kennedy Scholarship

This scholarship was established from the estate of Edith Emily Kennedy, in memory of her husband, CWO3 Lisle A. Kennedy, USN (Ret.). Mr. Kennedy retired after 22 years of service and worked as a supervisor at Electric Boat in Groton, CT for 12 years prior to his death in August 1975.

Arnold Krippendorf Scholarship

This scholarship was established as a memorial to Mr. Krippendorf who was very active in the U.S. Submarine Veterans of World War II organization and bequeathed a substantial sum to support the scholarship program.

Mr. McNeill had served as the King’s Bay SOSCA auctioneer at auctions held to raise funds for the Dolphin Scholarship Foundation for more than 25 years.

This scholarship was initially established by Dolphin Scholarship Foundation’s Board of Directors in memory of RADM Thomas A. Meinicke, USN (Ret.) for the many years he served on the Foundation’s Board. The scholarship was endowed in 2015 by Mrs. Alice Z. Meinicke.

ADM & Mrs. Richard W. Mies, USN (Ret.) Scholarship

This scholarship has been established for all of the honorable accomplishments Admiral Mies has achived in his Naval Career. Admiral Mies graduated first in his class from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1967 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics. After completing training for submarine duty, he served on two nuclear attack submarines, USS Sunfish (SSN 649) and USS L. Mendel Rivers (SSN 686), and a ballistic missile submarine, USS Nathan Hale (SSBN 623) (BLUE), before commanding the nuclear attack submarine USS Sea Devil (SSN 664). He has also served in various command positions. Admiral Mies retired from the Navy in 2001. He is a qualified Submarine Warfare Officer and Naval Aviation Observer.

Kathleen O’Beirne Scholarship

Established: 2000

Donor: Groton Submarine Officers’ Spouses’ Association

This scholarship was established by the Groton SOSA in honor of Kathleen O’Beirne. Mrs. O’Beirne’s early work as an advocate for Navy families resulted in her selection as Navy Wife of the Year in 1974. The author of the Navy Family Program’s first handbook, Making a Home in the Navy: Ideas to Grow On, she also wrote Charting Your Life in the Coast Guard. In addition, she has produced seven videos on military family topics and published more than 250 articles. Kathleen chaired the 2003 conference committee and is a frequent contributor to MCEC’s On the Move magazine.

Jay Edward Parr Scholarship

Donor: Jay Edward Parr Estate

This scholarship was established in 2011 as a result of a generous donation from the Jay Edward Parr estate. He was a career Navy man before retiring in 1974 as a Quartermaster Senior Chief, submarine qualified. He served on various submarines during his career, including the nuclear sub USS Tullibee and the USS Robert E. Lee, one of the “boomers” — the type that carried ballistic missiles. Jay joined the USS Robert E. Lee Association in 1991, and the U.S. Submarine Veterans, Inc., Wisconsin Base in 1995. He was also a member of the USSVI Holland Club, a special designation for those members who qualified in submarines more than 50 years ago.

RM2(SS) Rolla Parsons Scholarship

This scholarship was established by the Florence M. Parsons Trust in the memory of her son, Radioman Second Class Rolla Parsons, who was serving on the USS ARGONAUT (SS 166) when she sunk with all hands on January 10, 1943.

This scholarship was established by a very generous donation to DSF by the estate of Mr. Joe Henry Senft. Mr. Senft was a regular member of the United States Submarine Veterans of World War II (US SUBVETS WWII), having wartime service on the submarines USS R-11 (SS-88) and USS Threadfin (SS-410).

This scholarship was endowed in honor of David and Zoe Taylor. Captain Taylor has a distinguished 30-year career in the submarine service. Mrs. Taylor contibuted substantially to Captain Taylor’s success as a loving and supportive Navy wife, embracing the challenge associated with varied Navy assignments. Captain Taylor valued his education that provided him to opportunity to achieve tremendous success as a leader.

This scholarship was established by family members, friends, colleagues, and submarine supporters in memory of the 99 men lost on USS Scorpion (SSN 589) when she was lost on May 22, 1968.
