Submarine Force Scholarship Application FAQs

When is my application complete?

Applications are completed when all steps to the application have been submitted AND Dolphin Scholarship Foundation is in physical receipt of your official transcript – either electronically or through the mail.

Please note: transcripts received in the mail with a postmark after March 15 of the application year will not be accepted. We encourage you to account for processing and delivery times when requesting your transcript.

Can I get a scholarship for a Master's or Doctorate Program?

Dolphin Scholarships and most Administered Scholarships are only available for those pursuing their first associates/bachelors/trade school certification. The only exception at this time is the USS Montana (SSN 794) Scholarship which allows for the pursuit of a masters degree.

My sponsor did 5 years of Active-Duty time and 6 years in the Reserves, am I eligible?

No, only active-duty time counts towards the minimum 6 years of Submarine Service or 8 years of Submarine Support Service requirement.

My grandfather was in the Submarine Force, can I apply?

Currently, the only scholarship available to grandchildren is for those sponsors who served on USS Nautilus (SSN 571/SS 168) or Historic Ship Nautilus.

I’m an active-duty Sailor. Can I apply?

Scholarships for active-duty Sailors are limited to crew members who have served on the following submarines – USS Colorado, USS Delaware, USS Hampton, USS Indiana, USS Montana, USS Oregon, and USS Washington, or have been permanently assigned to a command based in Hawaii through the USS Bowfin Memorial Scholarship. These scholarships are not renewable and vary in award amount.

I am unable to pursue my degree full-time due to other commitments. Can I still receive a scholarship?

Only spouses are eligible to pursue part-time coursework. They must maintain a minimum course load of 12 credit hours per semester.

My older sibling applied for a scholarship. Do I need to submit all the required eligibility information?

Yes, DSF does not maintain eligibility records from year to year.

I plan on using the post 9/11 GI Bill, can I still receive a Dolphin Scholarship?

Dolphin Scholarships are the payer of last resort. If there is no financial need, the scholarship will not be issued.

Who completes the application?

When starting the application, the name and email of the student should be used, not the sponsor.

When does my sponsor's submarine service start?

Enlisted time starts the day they class up in BESS. Officer and nuclear trained enlisted time starts the first day of Prototype.

How do I find my sponsors history of duty assignments?

When should I send in my transcript?

Transcripts are accepted after Fall semester grades have been posted.

I'm not ready to go to college. Can I apply when I'm older?

Yes, child applicants must be under the age of 24 on March 15th of their application year.

How do I receive my scholarship?

Funds are mailed directly to your school biannually on August 1 and December 1.
