Martha Grenfell Legacy Society

The Martha Grenfell Legacy Society honors the founder of Dolphin Scholarship Foundation, Martha Lindsey Grenfell. Over sixty-five years ago, Martha Grenfell and other spouses of the U.S. Navy’s submarine community made a commitment to the education of children. Today, their vision has grown into one of the largest military community-related scholarship programs in the world: over fourteen million dollars have been awarded to more than 1,500 Dolphin Scholars.

In 1960, Mrs. Grenfell and the Submarine Officer’s Wives Clubs of Norfolk, Pearl Harbor, New London, Charleston, San Diego and Key West established the Dolphin Scholarship Foundation. The first scholarship of $350 was awarded to John L. Haines, Jr., in June 1961. The original purpose of the Foundation was to “provide financial assistance to sons and daughters of members or former members of the submarine service in obtaining a college education which will better fit them to become good productive members of our society.”
